Document Summary

Everything else comes from co2 and o2- building blocks of life. Co2 and o2 - glucose + o2 = photosynthesis. Organisms that can"t live on water and air use glucose + o2 = respiration. Metabolism- the control and use of energy through chemistry. Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts, makes big organic molecules, burned in mito for energy. Animals eat the plants and convert the sugars. Metabolic pathway- begins with a molecule that is altered through a series of steps to a final product. Each step is catalyzed by a specific enzyme. Anabolic reaction- goes from small to large, like photosynthesis. Catabolic- goes from large to small, like respiration. Atp- just adenosine from rna with really reactive phosphate. Phosphorylation- the addition of the phosphate changes the shape of a protein. Energy- the ability to do work or cause change. Work- moving matter against opposing forces(gravity, friction, coldm lighting, or concentration gradient) Potential energy- capacity to do work, stored energy.
