Document Summary

Protein position in membrane- does not lay down, rather stands up. Hydrophobic protein is in the hydrophobic part of the membrane. Saturated hydrocarbon tails bunch together(less fluid), unsaturated tails are spread apart. Fluidity of membrane goes up and down with temperature. Keeps it from getting too loose or too packed. Glyco proteins(oligo saccarides)glucose molecules attatched to integral proteins. Cell membranes act as barriers to create potential energy. Diffusion is the process where molecules go from where they re concentrated to where they"re not. Active transport- energy is used to move molecules across the gradient with help from atp. Oxygen, co2, water can all go through membrane as well as big hydrocarbon moleculels(gas) Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a membrane to equilibrate its relative concentration. If you put a plant cell into a hypertonic solution, water will leave the plant cell.
