The folks in charge by the 1740s, are the royal governors; they have been appointed by the king himself. In theory, they"re very powerful (representative of the monarch); live in mansions (largest building in each colony: assemblies. Most of their power resided in the fact that they could call colonial legislatures into assembly & they can also disband them whenever they chose. Also had the veto power, can appoint judges, & can appoint members of the upper house of the legislature (executive branch of the gov"t) Bicameral legislature 2 chambers means there are 2 houses; Upper house = senate (composed entirely of aristocrats, the governor"s buddies & he gets to appoint them) Lower house = house of representatives (elected by the ppl, much more radical, responsive to the whims of the ppl; they create the paper money in virginia: struggle for control.
