Perception: selection, organization, and interpretation of sensations (uses converting into neural signals (transduction) information already in memory) Built on sensations; our conscious experience on our sensations. Key processes include: sensory memory, pattern recognition, and attention. Perception is constructed, context dependent, and error prone. Key players- suprachiasmatic nucleus, hypothalamus, pineal gland, melatonin. Brief periods of sleep that only last a few seconds. Missing a single night of sleep- probs w concentration and tasks. Sleep deprivation symptoms- trembling, inattention, staring off into space, droopy eyes, general discomfort. Adaptive theory of sleep: sleep is a product of evolution. Restorative theory of sleep: sleep is necessary for physical health. Hypnagogic images- hallucinations of vivid visual images. Hypnic jerk: knees, legs, or whole body parts. If woken, you are not aware that you are asleep. Brief bursts of activity lasting only a second or two. If woken, will be aware of being asleep.
