Document Summary
Concept 35. 1- the plant body has a hierarchy of organs, tissues, and cells: 3 basic plant organs, roots, stems, leaves, organized into the root and shoot system. Roots: anchors vascular plant, absorbs minerals and water. Root hairs increase the surface area of the root: stores organic nutrients. Stems: nodes- points at which leaves are attached, internodes- segment between nodes, axillary buds- potential to form lateral shoot, terminal bud- located at shoot tip, causes elongation of a young shoot. Leaves: main photosynthetic organ of most vascular plants, flattened blade. Petiole joins the leaf to a node of the stem. Simple leaves vs compound leaves: figure 35. 6: simple- single leaf, undivided blade, compound- blade consists of multiple leaflets, doubly compounded leaf- each leaflet is divided into smaller leaflets. Concept 35. 2- meristems generate cells for primary and secondary growth. Meristems: apical meristems- located at the tips of roots and in the buds of shoots.
