Document Summary
Parts of the eye: cornea-transparent tissue where light enters the eye. Gets stiffer and less flexible as you get older: iris-muscle that expands and contracts to change the size of the opening (pupil) for light, lens-focuses the light rays on the retina. Transparent structure begins the pupil that changes the shape to focus images on the retina. Accommodation-the process by which the eye"s lens changes shape to help focus near or far objects on the retina: retina-contains sensory receptors that process visual information and sends it to the brain. Rods-black and white, but not color, function well in low illumination (about 120 million) located on the side of the retina. Cones-responds to color, operates best under high illumination (about 6 million); located in the middle of the retina (in the fovea). Fovea-densely populated with cones; vital to many visual tasks.
