Socialization: may start before you even get out of the womb, ex: when people find out the sex of the baby, they buy gender specific clothes, and paint the nursery pink or blue etc . Limits of socialization: cannot explain everything about development and personality, both biology and social interactions make us who we are. Theorists with good ideas: cooley, theorized how we developed the idea of self , the self emerges from our ability to imagine how others see us, we want the mirror of ourselves reflecting back on us to look good. Internalized sense of the total expectations of others in a variety of settings: merton"s role theory, theorized status, a recognizable social position. Ex: mother, doctor: ascribed: status that we are born with, achieved: status that is earned or imposed by others, master status.
