Document Summary

1st chair of sociology @ university of chicago. Smith"s theory of moral sentiments anticipates people like mead and freud. People will do what"s good for them and pursue own self interest (smith) . People pursuing self interest in a market society pursue it by exchanging with others. We don"t expect to live from the charity of someone else but rather from their self interest. Human nature not entirely selfish, but rather has sympathy (empathy) Instead of leading to harmony it leads to hierarchy/ranking and leads to competition. All our efforts in society are to achieve things that are valued in society (ex: money) in order to get higher rankings . We then get an idea of social standards. The impartial spectator or man within the breast : the standards (from society) that we compare ourselves to. Looking @ self as it were on the outside (looking glass self) They are so admirable because they have a lot of power.
