Britain wanted to sell poppy/opium from india to china but china bans this trade. Britain started opium wars to persuade opening of trade (3 or 4) Pull: jobs in the us (b/c of expansion and manifest destiny, need to build infrastructure) Chinese built from the west, irish built from the east. Ca becomes a state --> more restrictive laws. Previous restrictions: health problems, morality (no contractors because similar to indentured servants, independent immigrant women becoming prostitutes) Concern about the laborers: taking jobs away from americans , need to reduce competition. Will last for 10 years, to be revisited afterwards (renewed it a few times and then kept permanent for a while) Chinese not allowed to apply for citizenship (but already excluded because of naturalization law of 1790: not free white person ) Some judges had been letting it slide and letting chinese become citizens - But children born in the us can be citizens (14th amendment, definition of citizenship)
