How to deal with multiculturalism, getting recognition, sense of self. Demand for recognition leads to certain movements (feminist) Misrecognition or nonrecognition --> can damage people"s identity because the former is linked to the latter. Women: patriarchal societies put women down (inferior) so women believe themselves to be inferior, have low self esteem and are not able to achieve what they want. Black individuals: white society has constantly put them down, so they have internalized this and put themselves down. Bottom line: recognition is not just a courtesy --> it is a vital human need. Collapse of social hierarchies (were basis for honor-- exclusive) Modern idea of dignity: something everyone deserves. Democratic in nature (democracy has pushed for equal status) Importance of recognition modified and intensified in new individualized society (late 1700s) --> authenticity .
