We all need 8 hours- some need more some need less. Old people need more sleep sleep fragments more with age so the requirement is the same they just need more restful sleep. Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy wealthy and wise. He suggests that people who are early risers are just horribly smug. We have known for 130 years that in severe mental illness there has been sleep disruption. They initially thought it was the drugs but now research shows that it"s the condition not the drugs. They were awake during the night, slept during day and some showed no pattern. Mental illness and sleep are not just associated, they are physically linked in the brain.
