Document Summary
They can be a variety of causes: viral diseases, bacterial diseases, fungal diseases, protozoal diseases, parasitic diseases, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic diseases, toxic agents. Disease transmission in freshwater aquarium: most diseases usually occur when fish is first taken home and added to the aquarium; Diseases: ich (white spot disease) - caused by the ciliate protozoan ichthyophthirius multifiliis. It is probably the most important disease of freshwater aquarium fishes, and essentially all aquarium fish are susceptible to the infection. If not controlled, there is a 100% mortality rate. Life cycle: penetration stage ; by the free-swimming infective stage theront . It is a piriform ciliated organism (to help free swimming) with an apical performatorium structure (works as a mechanical driller to penetrate through skin) It contains muco-cyst that contains hydrolytic and proteolytic enzymes responsible for tissue lysis during penetration of fish skin. Weakest stage; can only live for 48 hours in this stage, and die if they do not penetrate a fish.
