PSY 236 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Group Selection, Eusociality, Darwinism
Document Summary
3. 6 billion years ago = life on earth. 60 million years ago = dinosaurs disappear. 2-4 million years ago = human species. 200,000 years ago = homosapiens appeared in africa. Traits are passed from generation to generation. More offspring are born than can survive. Only the survivors of the competition for resources can survive. Group success confers advantage to individual members. Human diversity is rewarded; the group functions more effectively when a range of characteristics is present in the group (all dna would be passed down) Select the best individual egg-layer within each group to reproduce. Select the best groups (cages) of egg-layers to reproduce. Within groups of successful cages, there were different roles. Personality = characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior, together with the psychological mechanisms - hidden or not - behind those patterns and our ability to recognize, label, and respond to these characteristic patterns in others. Individual tasks contribute to adaptive facility of the group.
