Self-regulation: psychological processes that alter emotion, behavior, or cognition to attempt to enhance adaptation or to achieve an explicit or implicit goal or goal state. Overlapping concepts, like: effortful control, cognitive control, emotional regulation, etc. Degree of organization, persistence, control and motivation in goal directed behavior. The kinds of interactions an individual prefers from compassion to tough mindedness. Salience (task positive) - globally task-activated - not specific to types of tasks or brain regions engaged in specific tasks. Executive attention - sort out multiple demands for intention (more below) Ventral attention - detecting unattended or unexpected stimuli, reorient attention toward salient stimuli. Dorsal attention - top down, guided, voluntary attention to locations or features. Default mode network (task negative) - associated with daydreaming, mind- wandering, sometimes ruminating; deactivated when task-focused, involved with autobiographical memory. Orienting - orient to sensory and internal events.
