Document Summary
There is no single identifiable cause of developmental stuttering. Children of parents who stutter are more likely to stutter themselves. Three genes have been identified that are directly linked to persistent developmental stuttering. Boys are more likely to persist in stuttering. Tends to develop between two and five years of age. There"s evidence of neurophysiological differences and motoric differences among pws compared to non-stutterers, but its not always clear these are casual factors. We do know that parents don"t cause their children to stutter. Very important to share with parents because a lot of them have guilt about their child stuttering. Many children do seem to grow out (spontaneous recovery) of their stuttering without intervention. Approximately 80% of preschool children experience stuttering recovery. Majority take at least one year to recover. Majority recover within 36 months (3 years) post onset. The following are the strongest indicators for spontaneous recovery: (hgdx3 = gary"s factors)
