Two other structures communicate with the basal ganglia: The basal ganglia receive input from all areas of the cortex as well as from the thalamus. The various areas within the basal ganglia communicate with one another. The basal ganglia output via the thalamus to the premotor and primary motor cortices. Parkinson"s disease: a progressive neural degenerative disease that results from a deficit in the amount of dopamine secreted by cells in the substania nigra. Hypokinesis: less than normal movement and/or akinesis (inability to initiate movement) Maintains fixed postures for long periods of time. Lead pipe rigidity: patients limbs resist being bent, but remain in final position when released. In the early states, pd is purely motor; patients typically experience normal sensation and normal intellect. As disease progresses, more general symptoms may occurs, including dementia. Symptoms can be controlled though a substance called l-dopa a precursor (used in the synthesis or creation) of dopamine.
