Document Summary

Three layered membranes cover the brain and spinal cord. The subdural space is located below the dura mater. Typically there is no true space between the dura and arachnoid maters. However, if blood vessels passing though dura mater rupture, blood can pool there. This condition is referred to as a subdural hematoma . The subarachnoid space is located below the arachnoid mater. It is filled with cerebrospinal fluid, in addition all cerebral arteries and veins as well as the cranial nerves travel through this space. The pia mater adheres closely to the surface of the brain, covering the gyri and going down into the sulci. The tow inner layers fold in between the two cerebral hemispheres and also between the cerebellum and cerebrum to brace against rotary displacement. The meninges of the spinal cord are continuous with the meninges of the brain via the foramen magnum. The ventricular system serves as a pathway for the circulation of cerebral spinal fluid.
