Nc has highly fertilized pasture which results in problems. It traps the nitrogens in the plant: suffocates cattle. Most calves make their own vitmains (including b1) but sometimes issues occur in that process. Affects the vision part of their brain (but the eyes look normal) Causes: high carb/high protein diet: increases one population of bacteria that creates. Thiaminase (the enzymes that break down thiamine: high sulfate diet: found in by-product feeds- this inhibits the use of thiamine. Urethra ruptures and a lot of fluids build up in the abdominal region -> results in water belly. Prevention: balance phosphorus to calcium diet! (1:2) Metal pieces (like from a fence) are ingested by the cattle. Anything heavy usually falls to the reticulum. Cattle can have trouble breathing due to pus inside its chest from infection. If punctures the reticulum wall or the heart, it can cause inflammation and infection: magnet fed to cow.
