VMP 420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Transovarial Transmission, Deer Fly, Horse-Fly
Document Summary
Vector: any arthropod (insect or arachnid) that can transmit a disease agent, extrinsic incubation period, the time needed before the vector can transmit a pathogen (the pathogen sometimes has to grow inside the vector) Intrinsic incubation period: time needed for a host to transmit a pathogen to a vector and infect it. Within the pest: transovarial transmission, adult gives pathogen to its eggs, transstadial transmission, pathogen passes through each life stage. Pest to host: mechanical transmission, biological transmission, pathogen has to develop or multiply inside the vector, extrinsic incubation period needs to be extended. Chorioptic mange: found on legs, scrotum, rump, tail, and udder, common in usa. Black-legged tick/ deer tick: transmits lyme disease. Asian longhorned tick: very similar to lone star tick but it has shorter mouthparts. Is seen from ny to nc in march-november: parthogenic, does not need to mate to reproduce, all eggs become a female, does not bite humans but it does bite animals.
