PHIL20401 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Bioethics, Social Forces, Obstetrics
Document Summary
An eugenic desire to exclude the disabled would have intervened. At this stage, preparedness for a possible induced abortion emerges, and with this preparedness, the process of self-determination is manipulated. There is a further ethical problem beyond the range of parental selfdetermination, or the limit ofthe right to self-determination, and applies to induced abortion in general: the right ofthe fetus to survival. Sato asks if pregnant women have an unconditional right to accurate information on their fetuses (p. 76). In japan and germany, it is illegal to inform the parents of the sex of a ferns until a certain stage of pregnancy. Encourages obstetricians to give information on prenatal genetic diagnosis in a positive light. However new eugenic practices will bring far greater losses to society as a whole by expanding discrimination against disabled people. One thing i can say is that we should not interfere with another"s purpose for living.
