Freud believed that as boys in the phallic stage seek genital stimulations they begin to be attracted to (cid:373)others/ hate the father a(cid:374)d see hi(cid:373) as a threat (cid:862)oedipus co(cid:373)plex(cid:863) Switching unacceptable impulses into opposite- switching feelings towards friendship. Disguising ones threatening impulses by attributing to others- thief thinking that everyone is a thief. Shifting impulses towards a less threatening object/person- girl getting the impulse to kick brother but kicks dog instead. Refusing to believe or even perceive painful realities- partner affair- spouse denies evidence. Role of defense mechanisms to reduce anxiety. Adler/horney- believed that anxiety/ personality is a function of social, not sexual tensions in childhood. Jung believed that we have a collective unconscious.
