PSYC 1210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Drive Theory
Document Summary
Drive theory: as anxiety increases, so does performance: negated because sometimes being too psyched up leads to being psyched out. Inverted u theory: if you"re anxiety is too high or too low, you won"t perform well. Each athlete has their own optimal arousal state (the zone of optimal functioning) and any further increases just lead to a decline in performance. Viewing situations as challenges rather than as threats. The amount of anxiety is less important than the interpretation itself. Positive vs negative anxiety: facilitative anxiety: can cope with stress, debilitative anxiety: cannot cope with stress, will alter your state by how much control you perceive you have and can impact attention span.
