PSYC 3466 Lecture 9: 2/4/19 cognition
Document Summary
Short term memory: short-term store of minimally processed information. Distinction from sensory memory, and long term memory. Participants presented with digits and asked to withhold their response until the entire list is received. Digit set was stimulus and participants call was response. Increase in input should correlate with increased output. Channel capacity: the greatest amount of information that a participant can report about a stimulus. Short term memory should have a channel capacity too. Determined by number of chunks of information. Memory chunk: the largest meaningful unit that a person recognizes. Different capacities for words, phrases, and sentences. But they are all chunks of information. The relationship between a length of chunk and rehearsal time. Significantly different from letters and words since participants were able to remember a max of 6 words. Ex: gray cat, lead pencil, deep water, long dress, old photo. Capacity to two word phrases dropped to 4.
