Federal district courts- serve as trial courts 94 district courts in total, each state has at least one and ny, ca, tx have 4. Trial courts for both criminal and civil federal cases. Grand jury- 16-23 people- hears charges against person and determines whether person should be brought to trial- issues indictment (formal accusation). Petit jury- 6-12 people- weighs evidence in criminal/civil cases. Civil- rules for either plaintiff (sue-er) or defendant (sued). Parties in civil case can choose to be tried by a judge or panel of 3 judges instead of jury. Officers of the court- each district has a us attorney to represent us in civil suits brought against gov"t and to prosecute people charged with federal crimes.
