Superego = most is unconscious, but some is conscious. Psychological consciousness/awareness is only the tip of the iceberg. Goal = to make the unconscious conscious free-association. Abreaction idea of emotionally reliving an unconscious psychosexual conflict: emotional experience that produces insight into your unconscious conflicts. Transference transferring unconscious conflict to analyst; experiencing conflict about therapist: related defense mechanism displacement interpretation analyst offers interpretation; usually involves infantile sexuality and infantile conflicts. Working through patient adjusts to information. Dreams = represent wish fulfillment, often in disguised form. Made the assumption that psychosexual drive is not a primary story in human development at all, unless it is in fact present in some way in your reality as a child. Proposes one fundamental need: self-realization: 2 components: mastery/competence + self- understanding/spiritual meaning. Kind of the father of humanism; self-realization = similar to self- actualization insight theory.
