Media users engage in social comparison with people featured in mediated communication. Self enhancement social downward comparison: seeking messages to boost self esteem/mood. Situational model, how you feel about yourself and who you think you are. Sesam model: we select media messages to regulate our working self. Working self: self concept is a dynamic uctuating construct with different aspects. How we think and feel about ourselves varies situationally. Activating different aspects of yourself. ex: listening to different kinds of musics before you do different activities (to the gym v. to a funeral) This plays into how you think you should be acting like. *main point* we are supposed to have a working self that uctuates, our sense of self changes and is not stable which in normal. We can use media to activate different selfs. Stereotype threat: state of stress and worry that one might con rm a negative stereotype that others are thought to hold towards one"s own group.
