We model tons of design education on the bauhaus. Behrens is sometimes called the rst industrial designer. Everything the bauhaus does is an answer to the question what is design? . There"s a clear difference between the ne arts (sculpture and painting and music) and decorative arts (everything else) A rift divides, about what the decorative arts are going to be. Some people tie it to craft, others to mass manufacturing. Design is very much tied to manufacturing, but it"s nested in modernism. (modernism is stripped of all ornamentation. ) Initially trained as a painter and graphic artist. Behrens moved away from ne arts and started to work with glass and ceramics. He was part of a german art nouveau. Woodcut ( the kiss ), then a weird glass thing that looks like a lamp, then a calendar. By 1901, he joined forces with a number of younger artists and designers.
