Psychologists are bound by a strict code of ethics to treat participants fairly, and to ensure their safety and well-being. Informed consent: written agreement to participate in a study made by a person who has been informed of all the risks that participation may entail. Freedom from coercion: psychologists may not coerce participation (physically, psychologically, or monetarily) Protection from harm: psychologists should always use the safer of two methods, and if no safe method is available, study must not be conducted. Confidentiality: obligated to keep private and personal information obtained during study confidential. An attempt to undo any change that resulted from being a participant in the study. Rules of ethics are enforced by institutional review boards who are people that review the proposals for studies to ensure the safety of the participants.
