Document Summary

Both nature and nurture play a role in directing behavior. It"s the interaction of genes and environmental influences that determine what humans do. Chromosome- strands of dna wound around each other in a double helix configuration. The probability of sharing genes is called degree of relatedness. Monozygotic twins share 100% of their genes while dizygotic twins share 50% Heritability- is a measure of the variability of behavioral traits among individuals that can be accounted for by genetic factors. Development psychology- the study of continuity and change across the life span. Cognitive development- the emergence of the ability to think and understand. Between infancy and adulthood, children must come to understand (a) how the physical world works, (b) how their minds represent it and how other minds represent it. Piaget suggested that development occurs in 4 stages: Sensorimotor stage- stage of development that begins at birth and lasts through infancy.
