Scope of the suicide crisis: ~ 1 million people kill themselves each year or about 1 every 40 seconds, worldwide suicide rates have increased about 60% in the last 45 years. In us, 30-35,000 people kill themselves each year, about 85 people a day: young people b/w ages 15-24 account for the largest increase in suicides during the past. 30 years: men kill themselves at approx. 4xs the rate for women: highest risk group for many years has been caucasian men over 35, but the rate among teenagers and young black males has been increasing since the 20th century. Verbal- spoken or written statements that can be direct or indirect. I= isolation: s= substance abuse, p= purposelessness, a= anxiety and agitation, t= feeling trapped, h= hopelessness, w= withdrawal, a= anger, r= recklessness, m= mood fluctuations, plaid pals, plan, do they one, lethality.
