Physical development ages 6-10: slow growth:2-4 inches per year, gross motor skills become more complex, perceptual motor skills more in play, fine motor skills increases ability to engage in more activities. Language: use as a tool to communicate, use to develop mutual understanding, use to enhance interpersonal relationships, discipline strategy: explanation and reasoning. Perspective taking: understand how others feel, recognize difference b/w behavior and intent, by 10-11, can listen to others pov and then problem solve solutions to solve conflict. Increased emotional control and cognitive abilities results in better quality social relationship: develop and maintain meaningful friendships, rules govern behavior, black & white now negotiable, safety and security, roles are fixed and not flexible. Industry v inferiority: self-esteem comes from ability to comply with rules, self-control and increase frustration. Increased knowledge of sex and pregnancy: learn correct language for genitalia, understand physical aspects of puberty, shy about undressing, play games such as doctor .
