Parental substance use: substance use was a factor in 34% of cases where children were removed from the home, as high as 60% in some states, co occuring issues, social isolation, poverty, unstable housing, domestic violence. Incarceration: estrangement from family and other social supports. Cps service delivery challenges: lack of services. Knowledge gaps: lack of systems coordination, differences in perspectives an time frame. Failure to thrive (ftt: organic, non organic - more common, unintentional, can"t afford food, different health beliefs, lower iq, unable to read or follow directions. Caregivers and ftt: depressed/withdrawn, socially isolated/ lack of extended family, anxious. History of ca/n: absence of attachment, substacne using, domestic violence, diminished cognitive functioning. Treatment for ftt: urgent, through medical assessment. Intensive in home services: substitute care place, team approach, caregiver education, treatment for underlying/ co-occuring issues, possible permanent deficits. Complex trauma: chronic maltreatment by parents or caregivers that begin in early childhood result in pervasive developmental outcoes.
