People typically obey those with authority (descriptive norm) and believe that this is how it should be (prescriptive norm) The norm of obedience is so strong that some claim it is a constant of human nature. 1932 took a job with the nazi party in austria. 1934 became department head responsible for jewish affairs. 1938 created model for forced immigration of jews. 1941- 1946 responsible for the logistics of deporting jews to extermination camps, where 6 million were killed. He claimed that he was never an anti- semite and that he was just following orders to kill jews. The leader of the group claimed that he was just following orders during his trial and defense. The participant agrees to take part in a study. Subjects are told that they are the teacher in an experiment. They quiz another participant (really an actor) in another room with memory questions.
