People expect and desire reciprocity in their social interactions and relationships. Social exchange theory: satisfaction comes from relationships in which we benefit the most and that cost us the least. First three months the focus is on rewards. Relationship clearly focuses on both by 7th month. Equity theory: satisfaction comes from relationships in which our benefits to costs is equalized. Relationship math: calculating strength of relationship based on certain factors. Calculation is different for social exchange theory and equity theory. Relationships that are defined by exchange (e. g. arranged marriages) People in relationship expect and desire mutual responsiveness. Fully communal relationships usually limited to very close friends longer- term romantic partners and family. A relationship may shift over time and across situations. More likely for those who repay favors if exchange relationship is assumed, but less liking if communal relationship is assumed. Lack of payment feels like exploitation if exchange relationship is assumed, but not if communal relationship is assumed.
