Document Summary

Decrease in self- awareness, which results in reduced self- regulation and greater conformity to situational norms. People can lose themselves under different circumstances (loud music, alcohol, darkness, etc. ), but the presence of other people increases the effect. Deindividuation at halloween (diener et al. , 1976) 1,300 children were observed during trick- or- treat on halloween night. They were told to take one piece of candy from an unattended bowl, with a second bowl of change nearby. Iv2: children anonymous vs. identified (name, where they lived) Dv: percentage that took extra candy or stole money. Kids were less likely to transgress (take extra candy or money) when they were alone as opposed to in a group. Kids were less likely to transgress when they were identified. In an alternate study the presence of a mirror helped to decrease transgression but only in identified group. Deindividuation often produces antisocial behavior when there are clear social norms at work.
