COMM 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Urban Contemporary, World Music, Low-Power Broadcasting
Document Summary
Early technology and the development of radio. Unhappy with the limitations of a telegraph system that required wires, inventors looked for ways to send messages without wires. Italian inventor guglielmo marconi took physicist james maxwell"s theories about electromagnetic waves and heinrich hertz"s work with electricity to transmit those waves to develop a machine for wireless telegraphy. Electromagnetic waves waves which can travel through the vacuum of outer space. Nikola tesla conceived the high-capacity alternating current system and invented a wireless device. By the twentieth century, inventors were working on broadcasting wireless voice and music transmissions to a large audience. The invention was so successful that in 1910 congress made it a law that large passenger ships had to carry the radio. Gave the commerce department power to issue radio licenses to limit the problem of interference between transmitters. American marconi was the biggest and best wireless system. A private-sector monopoly to dominate the radio industry.
