Document Summary

Extremely prolific too (loads of books written) Similarities: jewish-ish background, both distanced selves from judaism (for different reasons) Both saw their work as attempts to present a scientific assessment of humans in society moral prophets. There can"t be any improvement because its rooted in basic human condition, face brutal facts. Life infused with pain and suffering also the basis of buddhism. Iceberg model of the id, ego and superego: Id is at the bottom, ego and superego above it but only unknown tip is on the surface. Conscious part = tip, preconscious = middle part, unconscious = deepest/id. Need to be careful with the differences in contemporary and freudian meaning of ego. Unconscious bundle of instincts that maximize pleasure and avoid pain. Most powerful part of our 3-part mind. Sex drive comes from id, most closely associated with aggression and death.
