Common assumptions about marriage when first married: 1) marriage is going to be fun, 2) we know each other well, 3) our love will endure (in love, marriage will be easy for us. One does not so much get married, as they live out marriage. Changes in marriage inevitable: individual change, children come and go, things happen, good and bad, thing do not happen, expectations. The four stages of marriage: early marriage, raising children, middle age, marriage in later life. Caveats: this model is an ideal type, not all partnerships follow these stages. Still represents dominate pathway relative to other sequences. 3 challenges in the first few years: challenge 1: reconciling the ideal with the real. Inevitable result of prominent role of romantic love in the mate selection process. Realization that hoped-for changes in spouse unlikely to happen. Realization that some traits which were endearing before marriage are not so great. Athlete tired of attention he gives to sports.
