Mood Disorder States: Episodes
● Mood disorder states come in cycles called episodes
● Classification is based on the mood combinations of
clients’ episodes
● Depressive disorders include only clinical depression
episodes
● Bipolar disorders include mania episodes, either mania
alone (less common) or episodes of both mania and
depression
Depressive Symptoms
● Cognitive:
○ Trouble concentrating, “slow” thinking, unwarranted
guilt, feelings of worthlessness
■ Ex: friend didn’t think anything was wrong but
the person does (unwarranted guilt)
○ Suicidal ideation
● Depressive Triad:
○ Focusing on negative features of self, environment,
and future
■ Life sucks, and it’s never going to get better
● Environment & future
● Rumination:
○ Repeatedly thinking about negative past events and
failures
■ Can’t let them go
● Emotional
○ Depressed mood, anhedonia, or irritability at
self/others
● Somatic (Bodily)
○ Fatigue
○ Aches
○ Changes in appetite
○ Low sex drive
