Mood Disorder States: Episodes
Mood disorder states come in cycles called episodes
Classification is based on the mood combinations of
clients’ episodes
Depressive disorders include only clinical depression
episodes
Bipolar disorders include mania episodes, either mania
alone (less common) or episodes of both mania and
depression
Depressive Symptoms
Cognitive:
Trouble concentrating, “slow” thinking, unwarranted
guilt, feelings of worthlessness
Ex: friend didn’t think anything was wrong but
the person does (unwarranted guilt)
Suicidal ideation
Depressive Triad:
Focusing on negative features of self, environment,
and future
Life sucks, and it’s never going to get better
Environment & future
Rumination:
Repeatedly thinking about negative past events and
failures
Can’t let them go
Emotional
Depressed mood, anhedonia, or irritability at
self/others
Somatic (Bodily)
Fatigue
Aches
Changes in appetite
Low sex drive
