PSYCH 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sexual Dysfunction, Cognitive Restructuring, Dysphoria
Document Summary
Couples that experience communication problems are more likely to have sexual problems. Lack of assertiveness and comfort in talking about sexual activities is associated with sexual dysfunction. Most important predictors of failure to reach orgasm are failure to communicate, negative attitudes, and feelings of guilt. Masters and johnson first developed and popularized a skills-based couples therapy for sexual problems in the 70s. Most sex therapies now take a similar approach. Reduce negative attitudes about sex, increase effective sexual behaviors, & improve communication skills. Most sex therapies focus on 3 activities: Learning to focus on erotic sensations rather than performance demands or other thoughts. Exercises where couples learn to touch each other and draw their attention solely to physical and emotional feelings. Couples talk about what is most pleasurable and what is not. Increases comfort, relaxation, and enjoyment during sex. Planning specific times for sex (and sensate focus) at first. Correct mistaken beliefs and attitudes about sexual behavior.
