PSYCH 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 39: Mania, Heritability, Cortisol
Document Summary
Depressed people have difficulty disengaging attention from negativity. Ruminative style leads to worse depression than a distracting style. Dwelling on/overthinking about issues vs. diverting attention with activities. Problems in brain regions that regulate emotion (ex: pfc) Makes it harder to deal with stress. Schedule disrupting events (sleep loss) & goal attainment. Low social support higher relapse, slower recovery. Children with bipolar parent have 4x likelihood of having bipolar. Mania is associated w/ brain regions that have a high density of dopamine receptors. Dopamine: nt for controlling pleasure and reward. Clients engage in as many reinforcing activities as possible. Activity scheduling monitors activity and tracks its increase. All activities they did during a week. Take an activity schedule, talk about it in therapy, schedule another activity, etc. Increases reinforcement & reduces punishment for being active. Change maladaptive schemas to more rational, adaptive. Increase flexible thinking and attention to positive factors. Change ways of relating with others to counter depression.
