Document Summary
The existence of the unconscious mind is now highly supported. Ex: implicit memory -- using learned associations we aren"t even aware we ever learned -- is studied widely and regularly now. Ex: in lab studies, during unconscious thought people form new associations and re-organize info in better ways. Ex: recent model w/ 2 proposed unconscious mental processes: Uses logical knowledge to solve complex problems. The main issue: how motivated is the unconscious? (does it work towards goals?) All involve mental processing outside of conscious awareness. Losing awareness (shutting off experience) or losing time. Being detached from self (out of body) Sense of self splits into multiple identities or selves. Multiple persons appear to coexist in one individual. Primary symptom of dissociative identity disorder (did) The different personalities within someone w/ did. People may claim a memory returned after it was kept out of awareness due to trauma.
