Relapse: returning to heavy substance use after abstaining. 40 - 60% of people with alcoholism relapse within a year. 90% relapse within 4 years after completing treatment (niaaa) Longer abstinence higher likelihood abstinence will continue. A series of individual problems/situations over time. Things gradually become more overwhelming until person feels out of control they turn to alcohol. Return to people and situations associated with use. Stop paying attention to danger of relapse. Get a just one won"t hurt mindset. Some people actually relapse bc of feelings of shame and embarrassment about their past drinking (randles & tracy, 20% of those who use alcohol will develop aud. Lifetime prevalence of aud in us is 30% Only 24% of these people receive treatment. Ratio of men to women who develop alcoholism is 2:1.
