Triangular jaw (most animals: anterior and posterior direction. Human mouth- parabolic shape: broad, dental arcade- the array of teeth in a jaw. Humans are parabolic: mouth is bilaterally symmetrical. Right, left, up, down, front, back: split mouth in half- line down the midline, mesial- the side of the tooth that faces the midline staying on the parabola line . Facing front teeth: distal- facing where wisdom teeth were, lingual- faces the tongue, buccal- faces the cheek. Canine (c: humans only have one canine in each quadrant of the mouth. Each quadrant has 2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 premolars, 3 molars: i1-2 and i1-2. Incisors 1 and 2 on top and bottom: capital letter- permanent tooth, superscripts- upper jaw, subscript- lower jaw. Placental mammals: 3 molars in each quadrant of the jaw. Polyphyodonty- lifetime of successional teeth: multiple rows of teeth that move closer to the cheek as a tooth is lost. Homodonty/ homomorphy- all teeth are the same shape.
