Ancient medicine does not view disease in the same way that modern doctors do and therefore ancient medicinal practitioners do not treat disease in the same way. Greek world, health is considered an equal balance , or isonomia, of qualities. When these qualities are in excess or shortage, an imbalance occurs inside the body that causes disease. Qualities refer to hot, cold, dry, and wet. These qualities can then be coupled to elements, such as earth, air, fire, and water. The coupling of qualities and elements leads to the four fundamental humors in the ancient world: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. An imbalance of humors leads to disease in the body. Case a presents a women with a multitude of symptoms including infrequent menstrual cycles, achy body, sweatiness, exhaustion, palpitations, itchy rashes on armpits, elbows, and groin, itchy nose, raw throat, trouble swallowing, dizziness, and vomiting.
