Document Summary

Weather patterns & fronts: through the mid-latitudes weather is determined in part by the source region of their air masses. However, as the diagram shows the midwest really has no unique source air mass. What makes the midwest unique and prone to severe weather is the mixing of cold dry polar air with warm humid tropical air. Reading weather maps: fronts are drawn on a weather map as in the diagram. The direct the front is moving is indicated by the side of the line the symbol is i\on: the wind symbol has a number of components. They are always written in the same order as in the diagram. The wind direction is indicated by starting at the end of the stem and moving toward the center. Pressure is always written in mb using the last three digits of the pressure including one decimal place. Fronts: fronts are boundaries between different temperature air masses.
