AMY-2A Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Cellular Respiration, Hyperplasia, Hypertrophy
Document Summary
Cellular respiration- (aka aerobic respiration) breaking bonds for larger molecules for useable energy currency (atp) this is also known as metabolic reaction. Oxygen is important for cellular respiration to make maximal energy to form atp. Atp- a system to facilitate currency, trade. Red blood cells- no nucleus, they do not need oxygen, they carry oxygen, do no last long. Requirement for species of life, but an individual can survive without it. Regulated by hormones (especially females: growth- increase in size of cell, organ, or organism. Number of cells can increase, known as mitosis. Humans are made up of 75 trillion cells. Basic human needs: nutrients- molecules for structure and energy. Carbohydrates- primary energy source and structural ex. glycogen (glucose) Proteins- primary structural and for signaling (hormones and receptors) Protein makes up everything in our body besides body. Vitamins- act as cofactors by enzyme functioning. You need certain vitamins for enzymes to work. Vitamins = organic / minerals = non organic.
