HUM-10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Burqa, Couscous, Eurocentrism
Document Summary
The veil and western views of muslim women. Homar: not only from the 19th century but earlier, literature has had a stereotype of what these cultures are like (primitive). It"s a eurocentric view of the other and it"s used to justify colonization. Depiction: sexual cultures, controlled by their husbands, etc. > post cards also contribute to this stereotype. Niqab: she represents the middle east, since couscous is seen as representing the middle east. It"s a reflection of how the west views people from the middle east (mysterious). Other way around: hamburgers and fat americans. Connection to video: the idea that muslim women are oppressed. Video clip: it was their choice and they were liberated; men paid more attention due to their intelligence rather than their beauty. A lot of women were then required to wear the veil and it cost some problem. In the 1930s, they banned the veil and then women felt like they couldn"t go out.
