HUM-8 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Ephebos, Roman Mythology, Reality Television
Document Summary
Advertising reflects the values of a culture. Greek and roman mythology has had an important influence on popular culture. Most common usage of classical myth is to grant authority in our culture. How modern advertising might function in a similar way to which mythology functioned in greece. Commercials are not just inducements to buy products. They are also statements about why they are made, who benefits and how they fit into our lives. Ancient myth makes implicit statements about who ppl are, what they shouldn"t and should do, and how they should and shouldn"t behave. Collectively commercials operate in a similar way to the operations of mythology. However, ancient myth does this through aspirational tales. Commercials do the same thing through cautionary tales. More ppl know popular commercials than greek myt. Life may be dull, myths and advertisements are enhanced. Music, healing, medicine, plague, bow and arrow. A beard is short-hand for a man.
