Document Summary

Knowing who you are is particularly important is important in greek culture. Know thyself -maxim on apollo"s oracle at delphi. Oedipus the king (aka oedipus tyrannus and oedipus rex) by sophacles. Set in thebes (anti-athens in greek myth) Imaginative geography of myth does some political work. Seeing and knowing are conceptually linked in greek myth, especially in the place. Seeing is a form of knowing, and vice versa. Dramatic work throughout the play that tests the boundary of this relationship. Stakes driven at his feet as a baby. It"s about to be destroyed by the plague. Whole populus bows down before king because they need someone to save them from plague. Image of caring, oedipus cares for his people as a father would for his children. In first words, we see one of the problems that will be dramatized throughout the play. Oedipus is king, no good can come out of this position.
